McKinley Tech’s Defense Shines in Playoff Victory over Eastern

It took a team effort as the McKinley Tech Trainers’ defense and special teams combined for 22 points to eliminate the Eastern Ramblers, 44-12, in a DCIAA-Stripes semi-final matchup on Nov. 15 in Washington, D.C.

McKinley Tech scored six times in the third quarter, including a kick return touchdown by junior running back Shaquante Simms and a defensive safety. The Trainers put up a whopping 24 points in the third to take control of the game.

Senior free safety De’Markco Moorer was the player of the game, rushing for a 63-yard touchdown to kick off the Trainers’ third quarter domination, and catching a touchdown pass from senior quarterback Kenneth Matthews. Moorer also had key tackles on defense.

Eastern junior quarterback Ora Moore and junior receiver Dajuan Green led the league in both passing and receiving yards, respectively, this season. However, McKinley’s defense proved to be too much as they held the Ramblers to only 12 points.

Trainers Senior Rachid Burgess and junior Raymond Martin also scored defensive touchdowns. Freshman running back Danzel Brown rushed for a touchdown as well.

Tech Head coach Alimamy Kallay said his team is just fighting to make a name for themselves.

“I told them, ‘You’re the first guys to do this in over 30 years,’” he said. “When we walk in the gym everyday, there’s no banners. That was my goal when I took the job. We’re going to turn things around.”

McKinley Tech will face Phelps Architecture, Construction and Engineering in the DCIAA – Stripes Championship on Nov. 23.
