Morgan Holds Off a Charging Hampton to Get a Close Win


Morgan State men’s basketball team earned its second Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) win in a week as they edged Hampton, 80-78, on Jan. 19 in Hampton, Va.

Morgan State took a 42-33 lead into halftime and managed to hold off Hampton, who charged toward their lead in the second half. The Pirates chopped away Morgan’s lead, and tied the score at 77-77 with only a minute left in the game. But Morgan freshman guard Donte Pretlow knocked down free throws to give the Bears an 80-77 lead with only 42 seconds remaining. The Bears then maintained the lead for the win.

Morgan was led by senior forward DeWayne Jackson, who came off the bench to score 24 points.

Jackson was followed by three teammates who also finished in double digits in points: junior swingman Anthony Hubbard with 13 points, junior guard Justin Black 12 and junior center Ian Chiles 10.

Freshman guard Deron Powers led Hampton with 19 points, and10 assists and teammate sophomore center Emmanuel Okoroba added 15 points, and 10 rebounds.

Morgan State will next face Norfolk State on Jan. 21.
