Washington Mathematically Eliminated from Playoffs in Loss to Giants

Running back Andre Brown scored two touchdowns and defensive lineman Justin Tuck had four sacks as the New York Giants held on to a 24-17 win over the Washington NFL team on Dec. 1 at FedEx Field in Landover, Md.

Washington had one last opportunity to tie the score with one minute left in the game. Washington quarterback Robert Griffin III attempted to move the offense down field to get into scoring range but an apparent error on the part of the officials incorrectly granted Washington a first down. The officiating crew reversed their decision, but on fourth down, receiver Pierre Garcon had a pass stripped from his hands by Giants safety Will Hill. New York then ran the clock out for the win.

It was a tale of two halves for both Washington and the Giants; Washington led 14-0 in the second quarter after a smoking hot start by Griffin and the Washington offense. Griffin completed 16 of 17 passes for more than 150 yards in the first half, including a 19-yard touchdown pass to tight end Logan Paulsen by halftime.

But New York was able to tie the score at 14 late in the second quarter after a 23-yard touchdown run by Brown and a 22-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Eli Manning to tight end Brandon Meyers.

The second half was dominated by New York as they outscored Washington, 10-3. Brown ran for another touchdown veteran kicker Josh Brown added another 3 points with a 39-yard field goal.

Despite the hot start, Griffin completed only eight of 15 passes in the second half. Griffin finished 24-of-32 for 207 yards and a touchdown; he also ran for 88 yards.

Griffin was harassed by Tuck and the Giants’ defensive line. Tuck had four sacks and Cullin Jenkins added another sack. Manning completed 22-of-28 passes for 235 yards, a touchdown and an interception.

New York improved their record to 5-7 while Washington dropped to 3-9 and was mathematically eliminated from playoff contention. Washington will face the Kansas City Chiefs on Dec. 8 at FedEx Field.
