Three players for Coppin State scored nine points each as the Eagles were steam rolled by non-conference opponent Iowa, 80-50, on Dec. 22 in Iowa City, Iowa.
Iowa (11-2 overall) took control of the game from the very start, using three runs that came early in the contest to build a very comfortable lead over Coppin.
Coppin tied the score at seven just minutes into the game, but that was the closest they would get to a lead as Iowa then went on a 9-0 run. A few minutes later, Iowa went on an 8-0 run, and then went on to close out the first half with a 16-6 run just before halftime. With a 40-14 lead at the break, Iowa simply kept their cushion of a lead for the remaining 20 minutes of the game.
Led by sophomore forward Aaron White, Iowa shot a decent 51 percent from the field; White finished with 20 points, shooting 7-of-8 from the field and 6-of-7 from the free-throw line. Iowa made the most of close-in shots, offsetting horrible shooting from the perimeter as they went 0-for-17 from behind the three-point line.
Iowa also dominated Coppin on the boards with 54 rebounds to the Eagles’ 27.
Freshman shooting guard Sterling Smith, senior point guard Troy Franlin and junior small forward Andre Armstrong each scored nine points for Coppin, while freshman point guard Patrick and junior forward Michael Murray both added seven each.
Coppin now sits at 3-10 overall on the season and will face another tough non conference team at Arizona State in Tempe, Ariz. on Dec. 29.
