WASHINGTON (AP) — Police officers who have died in the line of duty have been honored along with their families at an event in Washington.

Dozens of officers attended the memorial service Monday morning outside the headquarters of the District of Columbia police department. D.C. Mayor Vincent Gray also spoke.

The service honored officers from D.C., Maryland and Virginia who have died on duty.

D.C. Police Chief Cathy Lanier told the crowd that it requires a special will and determination to pursue a career as a police officer. She said it’s important to honor and comfort families of officers who have been killed.
