(December 2, 2008) - Chicago police arrested William Balfour on Monday in connection with the slayings of singer-actress Jennifer Hudson’s relatives, a police spokesman said.
Balfour, 27, was initially detained for questioning on Oct. 24, the day Hudson’s brother and mother were found slain in their South Side Chicago home. Hudson’s nephew, 7-year-old Julian King, was found three days later in an abandoned SUV. A handgun was later found near the vehicle.
Authorities had been holding Balfour for an unspecified parole violation since the murders. Documents from the Illinois Department of Corrections show that Balfour spent nearly seven years in prison for vehicular hijacking, possession of a stolen vehicle and attempted murder. He was free on parole when the shootings occurred.
According to CNN.com, Chicago police spokeswoman Monique Bond said Balfour was transferred from a correction facility to the custody of detectives in the case. Balfour, the estranged husband of Hudson’s sister, is now awaiting charges on three counts of murder.
