(June 28, 2009) - The Honduran Congress voted Sunday to replace President Jose Manuel Zelaya, hours after Zelaya was arrested by military forces and transported to Costa Rica in an apparent coup.
The nation’s legislative body named president of the Congress, Roberto Micheletti, as provisional president.
The coup came as Zelaya vowed to follow through with a referendum that the Honduras Supreme Court had ruled illegal. Zelaya said he plans to continue with his duties and would attend a summit of Central American leaders Monday in Nicaragua.
Zelaya was elected in 2005, and his term is set to expire in 2010. He is not eligible for re-election under current Honduran law, but Sunday’s referendum would have asked voters to create a group that could modify the nation’s constitution and allow the president to run for another term.
