(October 27, 2009) - The Bowie State Bulldogs took their first loss in the Central Interscholastic Athletic Association on Oct. 24 as they fell to the Virginia Union Panthers, 17-16, during VUU’s Homecoming in Richmond.
The win helps Virginia Union (6-3 overall, 5-1 conference) stay in the chase for the CIAA Eastern Division title, while BSU also remains a quality contender for the division championship with a 6-3 overall, 5-1 CIAA record.
Here’s how the game played out:
The Bulldogs bit the dust when…
Panthers defender Enrique Cox returned a fumble 54 yards for a touchdown and Stephen Velasquez converted the extra point, lifting the Panthers to a 17-16 lead late in the fourth quarter.
Outstanding Player(s) of the Game:
VUU Aris English completed 12-of-24 passes for a game-high 157 yards and a touchdown, while Panthers receiver Joseph Jean-Pierre hauled in six passes for a game-high 78 yards. Stephen Johnson paced the VUU Panthers defense with a game-high 11 tackles.
BSU tailback Rodney Webb rushed for 85 yards and a touchdown, while teammate Budd Clifton added 34 more rushing yards and a touchdown.
More Game Notes: VUU was down, 16-7, with only eight minutes remaining in the game, but scored 10 uncontested points in the short period of time to steal the win from the Bulldogs’ paws. BSU quarterback Emmanuel Yeager has been performing very well in previous weeks, but the Panthers’ defensive unit was able to contain him to just 6 of 11 passes completed for 55 yards.
The Bulldogs will wrap up the CIAA regular season on Oct.31 as they travel to Virginia to take on Virginia State University for the Trojans Homecoming. Meanwhile, Virginia Union will close out their regular season as they host Elizabeth City State.
