Senior running back Trent Cannon scored three touchdowns to lift the Virginia State University Trojans to a dominant 42–19 victory over the Fayetteville State University Broncos in the Central Interscholastic Athletic Association (CIAA) Championship on Nov. 11 in Salem, Va.

The win marked the second CIAA title for Virginia State (10-0 overall, 7-0 CIAA) in the last four years, and the first perfect regular season in school history.

The Trojans wore down Fayetteville State the same way they beat every team they faced this season: with a pounding ground game led by the 2017 CIAA Offensive Player of the Year, Trent Cannon. The senior back exploded for 186 rushing yards on 19 carries in the championship game, including touchdown runs of 80 yards and 73 yards. Cannon finished the year with 1,573 rushing yards with 17 touchdowns.

Ranked amongst the top 15 teams in NCAA Division II football, Virginia State will receive a bid to compete in the D-II playoffs, a 28-team tournament scheduled to start Nov. 18.
