Washington, DC – Today Maryland Congressman Chris Van Hollen celebrated Jewish American Heritage Month at a luncheon on Capitol Hill. His remarks as prepared for delivery are below:

“I am proud to join with so many to formally recognize Jewish American Heritage Month.

“Our Republic was founded on a commitment to religious freedom and liberty of conscience.  No matter your ethnic heritage or faith, as Americans, we all inherit a right to enjoy the full promises of this great nation. This principle has acted as a beacon to the world, attracting people from all over to our shores. The first Jewish refugees arrived in America 350 years ago.  Since then, they have influenced every imaginable category of American life. Whether they arrived to flee persecution or simply in search of opportunity, as the Jewish community in this country has grown, so too has our strength as a nation.

“Today we gather to celebrate the traditions and indomitable spirit of the Jewish community.  We recognize its many accomplishments and remember the many ways the Jewish community has contributed to the rich cultural fabric of this country.”
