BGE Continues Monitoring Path of Hurricane Sandy and Pre-mobilizes Crews

Baltimore Gas and Electric Company Continues Monitoring Path of 
Hurricane Sandy and Pre-mobilizes Crews to Prepare for Potential Electric and Natural Gas Outages Late this Weekend and Early Next Week

BALTIMORE, Oct. 25, 2012 – Baltimore Gas and Electric Company (BGE) <http://www.bge.com/Pages/default.aspx>  today announced that as it continues to closely monitor the projected path of Hurricane Sandy, the company has proactively begun the process of pre-mobilizing nearly 1,300 storm and field personnel, as well as coordinating with out-of-state mutual assistance crews in preparation for the potential impact on BGE’s central Maryland service area late this weekend and early next week. 

“BGE has begun the process of pre-mobilizing its field and contractor crews, as well as support staff, well in advance of the potential impact of Hurricane Sandy, enabling the company to be in a position to begin restoring service as soon as it is safe to do so,” said Jeannette M. Mills, vice president and chief customer officer for BGE. “Additionally, BGE is proactively coordinating and securing out-of-state mutual assistance crews to ensure they are in place in advance of the storm. Although the storm’s path is still uncertain and its impact is still several days away, it’s extremely important that BGE customers consider what steps they would need to take, particularly given that it is rare for a tropical system to threaten the central Maryland region this late into hurricane season.” 

Hurricane Sandy’s path remains uncertain and may continue to change throughout the next few days, but it is anticipated to bring heavy rain, up to 3 inches in the northern and eastern parts of BGE’s service area, and sustained wind of 20 – 25 miles per hour and wind gusts up to 45 miles per hour. The company is anticipating that several hundred thousand customers may be affected late Sunday and throughout Monday. BGE has taken these proactive steps so that crews can respond to outages as safely and as quickly as possible should they occur. 

Just as BGE plans ahead and has procedures in place to respond to power outages as safely and as quickly as possible, customers should also have a plan in place prior to any events that may cause them to be without power for extended periods of time. BGE encourages customers to take time now to ensure they are prepared should severe weather affect the service area resulting in extended power outages. As a reminder, BGE customers who may be elderly, handicapped or dependent on electricity for medical equipment, should always have alternate arrangements in place should they experience an extended power outage.  Customers using a generator should follow manufacturer instructions and be sure to locate generators in well-ventilated areas.  Customers also are reminded to call 877.778.2222 to report a power outage or downed wire using BGE’s automated system.

Just as BGE prepares for severe weather and the possibility of power outages, customers should take steps to ensure the safety of their families and property during service interruptions. BGE encourages customers to take the following steps to prepare for extended outages:

·      Stay informed – Stay aware of changing weather conditions and plan ahead. Have a battery-powered radio with a weather band so you can hear emergency information when the power is out.

·      Make a plan – Discuss and document an emergency plan with those in your care. Develop a family emergency plan that includes alternative arrangements should the need arise to leave your home. Make provisions for special needs of any family member such as the elderly, handicapped, medically affected or infants. If you are dependent on electric-powered medical equipment, you are encouraged to seek alternate arrangements (Customers with Special Needs <http://www.bge.com/customerservice/stormsoutages/stormcenter/beforeastorm/Pages/Customers-with-Special-Needs.aspx> ) in the event that your electric service is interrupted.

·      Make a list of emergency phone numbers (including 877.778.2222 to report an outage to BGE) and keep a personal telephone book and one corded phone or a cell phone on hand. 

·      Build an emergency kit – Keep enough emergency supplies on hand for you and those in your care. Remember supplies for children, those with special needs and pets.

·      Keep the following items readily available

o   
Flashlights – not candles 
o   Fresh batteries 
o   Battery-operated clock radio 
o   Corded telephone 
o   Fully charged cell phone 
o   Non-perishable foods 
o   Water – one gallon of water per person per day for at least three days for drinking and sanitation
o   First aid kit
o   Local maps
o   Blankets

Customers also should consider filling the fuel tanks of their vehicles in the event a power outage affects service to neighborhood gas stations. For customers who rely on well water, filling a bathtub with water in advance of severe weather is strongly encouraged. 

In instances of long periods of heavy rain, BGE prepares for the very real potential of not only outages relating to overhead power lines, but also outages caused by flooding in cases where water enters gas and electric meters. In cases where flooding affects equipment after the meter, customers are responsible for all wiring, pipe, appliances, breaker boxes and any other gas or electric-related equipment or service inside the home or business. Customers are urged to consider the following safety tips:

·      Proceed with care if you have experienced flooding in your basement and or other areas of your home

·      Do not enter a room with standing water, particularly if the water covers electrical outlets or electrical cords that are plugged into outlets

·      Ensure the electrical system is shut off before entering a flooded room or basement

·      Do not attempt to shut off your electrical system if you have to stand in water or on a wet floor to do so

·      If you experienced flooding, do not turn on any lights or appliances without having a comprehensive inspection performed by a licensed electrician and also by a registered plumber with a gasfitter's license for gas appliances

In addition to monitoring current and approaching weather conditions that could result in service interruptions, BGE regularly conducts emergency training drills during which all aspects of storm-related service restoration are tested. BGE’s most recent drill occurred in early October of this year where employees across the company reviewed BGE’s Electric Delivery Emergency Response Plan to ensure that storm response procedures are up-to-date and in line with industry standards.
