Baltimore Gas and Electric Company Recognized for Enhanced Environmental Management Practices with ISO 14001:2004 Certification

Prestigious certification recognizes companies from around the world for promoting effective, systematic management of environmental responsibilities and risks through a process of and commitment to continuous improvements

BALTIMORE, Sept. 25, 2012 – Baltimore Gas and Electric Company (BGE) has received the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) 14001:2004 company-wide certification for its commitment to continuous environmental management improvements. Recently, BGE’s electric transmission, electric distribution, shared services and fleet services lines of business received ISO 14001 certification. This, coupled with the ISO 14001 certification earned by BGE’s gas distribution operations in March 2011, completed BGE’s company-wide certification, earning BGE the distinction of being one of only a relatively few number of companies in the utility industry to receive this certification.  In addition, Exelon sister utilities – PECO, based in Philadelphia, and ComEd, based in Chicago, are ISO 14001 certified.

“After two years of rigorous audits, we are pleased to achieve the ISO certification for all of our owned and operating facilities company-wide,” said Kenneth W. DeFontes Jr., president and chief executive officer for BGE. “BGE is steadfast in its commitment to the environment and responsibly managing natural resources along with our priority of providing safe and reliable natural gas and electric service to our customers. We are proud to adopt this important environmental standard of excellence, and I extend my thanks to all leaders and employees across the company. BGE is committed to using natural resources responsibly, enhancing energy efficiency and continually expanding and progressing environmental programs and performance. It is rare for a utility to achieve this certification, and I am pleased that this recognition, along with our other certifications, positions BGE as a global environmental leader.”

The ISO 14001 is a voluntary, international standard that works with companies to improve environmental performance, while complying with all applicable legislation. ISO 14001 outlines specific requirements for environmental managements systems (EMS). An EMS helps companies, like BGE, manage environmental compliance requirements, reduce environmental impacts and continually improve performance. Additionally, BGE is able to meet its environmental performance expectations, mitigate risks, introduce new efficiencies and enhance compliance with local, state and regulatory requirements.

As part of the Exelon family, BGE upholds the Exelon environmental policy and is committed to enhancing BGE’s environmental performance in accordance with international standards. To learn more about BGE’s environmental stewardship initiatives, visit bge.com.
