Baltimore Gas and Electric Company Restores Electric Service to Nearly All Customers Affected by Last Week’s Snowstorm but Braces for Possible New Outages As Another Winter Storm Approaches

Overhead Line and Tree Crews from three states will remain in Central Maryland to assist BGE should new outages occur

BALTIMORE, Feb. 9, 2010 – Baltimore Gas and Electric Company (BGE), a subsidiary of Constellation Energy (NYSE: CEG), today announced that it has restored electric service to the vast majority of customers affected by last Friday’s historic snowstorm, but advised customers that they could experience new outages as another weather system is expected to bring significant snowfall to Central Maryland today and tomorrow.
“BGE employees have been working around-the-clock under extraordinarily difficult operating conditions, restoring electric service to more than 95,000 customers in less than four days,” said A. Christopher Burton, senior vice president of gas and electric operations and planning for BGE. “But their work may not be over. With the approach of this second powerful and dangerous storm, BGE’s field forces and other employees involved in the restoration effort are committed to continuing the very challenging and often hazardous work that they have been so focused on for nearly a week.”
Linemen and support staff numbering between 450-500 from Kentucky, Tennessee and Ohio will remain in Central Maryland and continue to provide mutual assistance to BGE should it be needed.  The total number of people involved in the restoration effort is approximately 1,500 which includes BGE personnel, contractors and out-of-state support.  BGE’s Call Center has taken more than 138,000 calls since the start of storm operations on Friday afternoon.
  BGE encourages customers to take the following steps to help ensure the safety of their families as well as BGE employees engaged in the restoration effort:

* Stay away from downed power lines and call BGE at 1-877-778-2222 immediately to report them.
* Keep area around pad-mounted transformers and switches clear of ice and snow so that BGE restoration crews can locate the equipment and gain access.  Pad-mounted transformers and switches are square green boxes (measuring approximately 3x3x3) which are usually located on front or side lawns in residential areas and are even larger green boxes adjacent to parking areas and buildings in commercial settings.
* Keep gas meters and attached equipment clear of ice and snow to avoid malfunction. Use a broom, not a shovel when clearing ice and snow from around gas meters.
* Keep ice and snow away from heat pump coils to avoid malfunction.
* Keep outside pipes which provide ventilation for direct-vent furnaces and water heaters clear of ice and snow.
* Keep outside dryer vents clear of snow and ice build-up.
* Mark areas such as in-ground swimming pools so that BGE personnel who may have to walk through backyards to access equipment can avoid walking on snow covered pool covers which may become unstable and collapse.
