STATEMENT FROM COUNCIL PRESIDENT YOUNG REGARDING COUNCILWOMAN HOLTON’S NO CONTEST PLEA TO CAMPAIGN FINANCE VIOLATION CHARGES

BALTIMORE, MD – “As elected representatives to Baltimore City’s legislative body, the members of the Baltimore City Council understand and accept the fact that we are held to the highest of ethical standards. As President of the City Council I take very seriously my duty to honor the public’s trust in the city’s legislative branch.

Today, my colleague, Councilwoman Helen Holton, entered a plea of no contest to campaign finance violation charges. Prior to Councilwoman Holton’s plea agreement I stood firm in my belief that the charges against her did not amount to a conviction and that until she had her day in court she would remain at the helm of the council’s Taxation, Finance and Economic Development Committee.

Councilwoman Holton’s plea today is not legally an admission of guilt, but the fact that her actions resulted in a misdemeanor makes it necessary for me to immediately remove her as chair of the Taxation, Finance and Economic Development Committee.

Councilman Carl Stokes, who currently serves as a member of the Taxation, Finance and Economic Development Committee, will serve as chairman.”
