Baltimore chapter of the Exelon African-American Resource Alliance launches 26 Acts of Kindness @ Work initiative on Monday

BALTIMORE, Jan. 18, 2013 – Baltimore Gas and Electric Company (BGE) <http://www.bge.com/Pages/default.aspx>  today announced that employees from throughout the company are joining together for a Day of Service on Monday to celebrate the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.  On the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day holiday, BGE employees will volunteer their time and talents to Moveable Feast <http://www.mfeast.org/> , delivering meals to Baltimore City’s homebound residents who are affected by HIV/AIDS; the Salvation Army <http://www.salvationarmyusa.org/usn/www_usn_2.nsf> , packing and sorting toys for disaster relief; and the 6th Branch and Operation Oliver <http://www.the6thbranch.org/?q=oliver> , helping to clean up Baltimore’s Oliver neighborhood.

To bring the memory of Dr. King and his message of service together for BGE and its parent company, Exelon, in the Baltimore area, the Baltimore chapter of the Exelon African-American Resource Alliance (EAARA) is launching its 26 Acts of Kindness @ Work initiative. This initiative puts a workplace spin on the nationwide movement started by NBC journalist Ann Curry, which encourages everyone to perform one act of kindness for each of the victims of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting. EAARA is encouraging fellow BGE and Exelon employees to perform anonymous acts of kindness for their co-workers, team members and leaders, and their family, friends and communities.

“Many people are searching for ways to be a catalyst for good, and 26 Acts of Kindness provides that opportunity,” said Anita Jackson, BGE’s economic development director and president of EAARA’s Baltimore chapter. “This effort is a wonderful way to honor the life and legacy of Dr. King, who believed the best way to achieve positive change is through non-violent acts. By launching 26 Acts on the upcoming holiday, BGE employees are paying tribute to Dr. King’s commitment to kindness and respect for each other.”

EAARA is one of Exelon’s Employee Network Groups (ENGs), which support diversity and inclusion, bring insight to Exelon’s strategies and goals and serve as a resource to the corporation and its employees. The groups are self-initiated, voluntary, corporate-wide and inclusive.  Current ENGs represent various communities, including African-Americans; Latinos; Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgendered Individuals; Women; Military/Veterans; and Asian Americans.

Since its founding nearly 200 years ago, BGE has played an integral role in working with Maryland communities to address economic development, public safety, civic issues and other initiatives that help enhance our neighborhoods. Through the use of shareholder dollars, BGE supports programs that deliver measurable and sustainable impact in areas of energy efficiency and assistance, education, the environment, economic and community development, emergency response and safety.

BGE’s corporate citizenship aligns with that of its parent company, Exelon Corporation. As part of Exelon’s merger in March 2012, Exelon and its subsidiaries have committed to maintain charitable giving of an average of $7 million per year in Maryland, including BGE’s service area, for the next 10 years.
