GOVERNOR MARTIN O’MALLEY CHAMPIONS MARYLAND’S AEROSPACE

INDUSTRY AS PART OF GROWING INNOVATION ECONOMY

Tours ATK Space Systems Division

BELTSVILLE, MD (July 22, 2013)Governor Martin O’Malley today visited ATK Space Systems Division where he highlighted Maryland’s aerospace industry as integral to the state’s growing innovation economy. During his visit, the Governor participated in a tour of the ATK’s Beltsville facility.

“It’s no accident that companies like ATK are here in Maryland. They’re here because we’re making better choices to build a 21st century workforce, expand opportunity and strengthen our middle class,” said Governor O’Malley. “We celebrate companies like ATK and growing industries like aerospace because of what their success means to Maryland families.”

In June, ATK joined Governor O’Malley, Maryland Department of Business and Economic Development (DBED) Secretary Dominick E. Murray, and a delegation of Maryland companies at the 50th International Paris Air Show in an effort to help Maryland businesses market themselves to international customers and promote the State of Maryland to businesses abroad. ATK, a global aerospace, defense and commercial products company, has close to 950 Maryland employees across three offices, including 450 workers in its Space Division in Beltsville.
Maryland remains a leader in the aerospace and defense industries. The state is home to 15 of America’s top 20 aerospace companies and 70 of the country’s top 100 defense contractors. These industries support more than 145,000 private and public sector jobs in Maryland.

“We are proud to stand with Gov. O’Malley on his support of the aerospace industry as a major economic engine that contributes to strong business growth in Maryland,” said Tom Wilson, vice president and general manager of ATK’s Space Systems Division. “Being located in an aerospace and defense cluster has enabled us to expand and create high-paying manufacturing jobs.”

“Maryland’s thriving science and innovation economy means jobs today and jobs tomorrow,” said U.S. Senator Barbara Mikulski. “Scientific innovation creates jobs and economic growth through innovative products and new businesses. The close partnership between federal and state agencies along with the private sector at companies like ATK will help support good paying jobs and strengthen our middle class.”

“I’m pleased the Governor visited ATK today to recognize the outstanding work they are performing,” said U.S. Congressman Steny Hoyer. “Just two years ago, I joined ATK when they opened new facilities in Beltsville, and saw firsthand the innovative aerospace and defense products they develop and manufacture for the federal government and commercial use. Since then, ATK has continued to partner with the government on premier aerospace and defense products and technologies, and create good-paying jobs here in Maryland. I’m hopeful that Congress can help advanced manufacturers like ATK build on the progress they have already made by moving forward with the Make It In America plan I am leading in Congress to strengthen the manufacturing sector and create jobs. I applaud ATK on their success, and look forward to working with Governor O’Malley to ensure that more businesses like ATK can make it in America and right here in our great state.”

“ATK and other aerospace companies in Maryland play a critical role in creating high-tech job growth,” said U.S. Congresswoman Donna F. Edwards. “As Ranking Member of the Space Subcommittee, I am working to establish long-term goals that will unify NASA, our aerospace industry, academia, and other commercial ventures behind a singular vision that will lead to significant innovation and economic development. I applaud Governor O’Malley’s visit -- with the majority of aerospace companies and a highly-skilled workforce all located in Maryland, we are well-situated to lead any space related initiatives in the years ahead.”

There is no progress without jobs. By making better choices, Maryland has now recovered more than 99 percent of the jobs lost in the national economic downturn - a significant step forward in our job creation and recovery efforts. But there are still work to be done. That’s why the O'Malley-Brown Administration is committed to investing in the skills, talents, innovation and creativity of our people so that we can continue to strengthen and grow our State’s economy, and move forward by expanding opportunity for our diverse and growing middle class.
