GOVERNOR MARTIN O’MALLEY TO ANNOUNCE MARYLAND INFANT MORTALITY RATE

ANNAPOLIS, MD (August 28, 2013)Tomorrow, August 29, Governor Martin O’Malley will join Dr. Joshua M. Sharfstein to announce Maryland’s infant mortality rate at an event at the Baltimore Medical System’s Highlandtown Healthy Living Center in Baltimore City.

WHERE: Thursday, August 29, at 10:00 a.m.

WHEN: Highlandtown Healthy Living Center, 3700 Fleet Street, Baltimore, MD

There is no such thing as a spare Marylander. The O’Malley-Brown Administration set a goal of reducing Maryland's infant mortality rate 10 percent by 2012. We reached that goal in 2009, driving Maryland’s infant mortality rate down to 7.2 per 1,000 live births. We continued to drive down our infant mortality rate in 2010 and maintained our progress in 2011. To keep Maryland moving forward, we set a new goal to reduce our statewide infant mortality rate an additional 10 percent by 2017 as well as to reduce the African American infant mortality rate by 10 percent by 2017.
