Natural gas service to approximately 250 customers interrupted in order to allow BGE to safely make repairs to a struck gas main; additional outages may be necessary in order to complete repairs
BALTIMORE, Feb. 16, 2011 – Baltimore Gas and Electric Company (BGE) today announced that it is working to repair a six inch high pressure natural gas main that was struck by a contractor working in Frederick County. The incident occurred this afternoon in the 1200 block of Park Ridge Dr. in Mt. Airy. BGE crews are on the scene assessing the damage and canvassing the area to determine the extent of damage. Currently, natural gas service to approximately 250 customers has been temporarily interrupted and additional outages may be necessary in order for BGE to complete its work. The duration of the outage is unknown at this time. Using an automate telephone messaging system, BGE is working to notify affected customers and to advise them of next steps.
“BGE is making every effort to repair the damaged gas main while minimizing the number of customer interruptions,” said Brian C. Daschbach, senior vice president of integrated field services for BGE. “It is estimated that repairs will take several hours. Once the work is completed, BGE will have to enter every affected home and business to turn the gas back on and relight natural gas appliances. We thank our customers for their cooperation and understanding.”
Customers who lose natural gas service are reminded that if they choose to use alternative energy sources such as generators or space heaters, to follow the manufacturer’s instructions and be sure to operate them in well-ventilated areas.
