Baltimore Gas and Electric Company Encourages Customers to Enroll in PeakRewardsSM Air Conditioning Program in Advance of June Bill Credits



Customers can receive bill credits of up to $200 for the first year of participation

BALTIMORE, May 19, 2011 – Baltimore Gas and Electric Company (BGE) today encouraged customers with central air conditioning or electric heat pumps to enroll in its PeakRewardsSM air conditioning program in time to receive the first of four summer bill credits which begin next month. In most cases, customers who enroll in BGE’s PeakRewardsSM program within the next week and have a programmable thermostat or air conditioner switch installed by May 31, will begin receiving bill credits in June. Bill credits are applied to participating customers’ accounts during the summer months of June, July, August and September once the PeakRewardsSM programmable thermostat or outside air conditioner switch has been installed. The dollar amount of the bill credit is equal to the level of participation –100, 75 or 50 percent – as determined by the customer. New PeakRewardsSM customers also receive a signing bonus equal to their level of participation. For example, a new customer who chooses to participate at the 100 percent level would receive a $100 bill credit and a $100 signing bonus spread out over four months for a total of $200 applied to their account. In subsequent years, their bill credit would be $100 spread out over four months.

“Currently, more than 300,000 BGE customers are participating in the PeakRewardsSM program and more than 440,000 devices have been installed, giving BGE the ability to significantly reduce peak energy usage during periods of very high electric demand,” said Ruth Kiselewich, director of energy efficiency and peak usage reduction programs for BGE. “This is extremely helpful during very hot summer days when BGE is working very closely with electric grid operators to ensure there’s enough power to meet customer demand.”

BGE’s PeakRewardsSM program is part of the BGE Smart Energy Savers Program®, a suite of offerings intended to help customers reduce energy usage and demand in support of EmPOWER Maryland’s goal of a 15 percent per capita reduction in energy consumption by 2015. Since 2008, customers participating in the BGE Smart Energy Savers Program® have achieved an overall energy savings of more than 550 million kilowatt hours, equivalent to eliminating the carbon dioxide emissions from the electricity use of nearly 46,000 homes.
