Ahead for Natural Disasters and Other Emergencies

Customers can ‘Pledge to Prepare’ for emergencies throughout September as part of the national Ready Campaign


BALTIMORE (Sept. 12, 2013) – This September, Baltimore Gas and Electric Company (BGE) recognizes the ninth annualNational Preparedness Month and encourages all customers to take part by taking the time to prepare now for natural disasters and other emergencies. Just as BGE plans ahead and has procedures  in place to respond to natural gas and electric outages and other emergencies as safely and as quickly as possible, customers should also have an emergency plan in place prior to any events that may cause them to be without critical energy services  for extended periods of time.

“In recent years, central Maryland has experienced several extreme and sometimes unpredictable weather events including a hurricane, tropical storms, a derecho, back-to-back snowstorms, tornadoes and even an earthquake,” said Carol Dodson, vice president and chief customer officer for BGE. “Many times these weather events impact our area quickly and without warning, and are powerful reminders that each of us is responsible to be ready for both predicted and unexpected emergencies.”

“Safety is a top priority at BGE, and we encourage our customers to make sure they also proactively take steps to keep themselves, their families and their personal property and homes safe, before an event occurs,” said Dodson. “We encourage our customers to visit the Storm Center on for suggestions and tips on staying safe beforeduring and after a storm. If your family has not begun the process of proactively preparing for emergency events, we encourage you to join with thousands of people across the nation and'Pledge to Prepare' during the month of September.”

Just as BGE prepares for severe weather and the possibility of power outages, customers should take steps to ensure the safety of their families and property during service interruptions. BGE encourages customers to take the following steps to prepare for extended outages:

·         Stay informed – Stay aware of changing weather conditions and plan ahead. Have a battery-powered radio with a weather band so you can hear emergency information when the power is out.

·         Make a plan – Discuss and document an emergency plan with those in your care. Develop a family emergency plan that includes alternative arrangements should the need arise to leave your home. Make provisions for special needs of any family member such as the elderly, disabled, medically affected, or infants. If you are dependent on electric-powered medical equipment, you are encouraged to seek alternate arrangements (Customers with Special Needs) in the event that your electric service is interrupted.

·         Make a list of emergency phone numbers (including 877.778.2222 to report an outage or downed power line to BGE) and keep a personal telephone book and one corded phone or a fully-charged cell phone on hand.

·         Build an emergency kit – Keep enough emergency supplies on hand for you and those in your care. Remember supplies for children, those with special needs and pets.

·         Keep the following items readily available:

o   Flashlights – not candles

o   Fresh batteries

o   Battery operated clock radio

o   Corded telephone

o   Fully charged cell phone

o   Non-perishable foods

o   Water – one gallon of water per person per day for at least three days, for drinking and sanitation

o   First aid kit

o   Local maps

o   Blankets

Customers also should consider filling the fuel tanks of their vehicles in the event a power outage affects service to neighborhood gas stations. For customers who rely on well water, filling a bathtub with water in advance of severe weather is strongly encouraged. National Preparedness Month is a nationwide, month-long effort hosted by the Ready Campaign and Citizen Corps, encouraging households, businesses and communities to prepare and plan for emergencies. Preparedness is a shared responsibility; it takes a whole community. This year’s National Preparedness Month focuses on turning awareness into action by encouraging all individuals and all communities nationwide to make an emergency preparedness plan.
