Tomorrow, Lt. Governor Anthony G. Brown will give remarks at an event celebrating the completion of renovations to the Joan W. Jenkins Foundation Worcester Addictions Cooperative Services (WACS) Center. The renovations were completed with $288,000 in State funds, $92,000 from Worcester County, as well as private funds from the Joan Jenkins Foundation, American Legion, the Community Foundation and others to upgrade building systems and reconfigure space to improve patient safety, patient confidentiality, and ADA accessibility.

The WACS Center, serving the residents of and visitors to northern Worcester County, is a collaborative Addictions Treatment and Recovery project which began in 1988. The collaborators include: the Joan W. Jenkins Foundation as owners of the building; The Atlantic Club, a recovery organization that hosts 12-step groups located on the first floor; and the Worcester County Health Department Addictions Program, which runs the addiction clinic on the second floor. The WACS Center’s mission is to address the treatment and recovery needs of addicted and co-occurring individuals. This collaborative effort integrates recovery oriented treatment, provided by Worcester County Health Department staff, with the 12-step recovery programs in the Atlantic Club.

The O’Malley-Brown Administration made it one of their 15 Strategic Policy Goals to expand access to substance abuse treatment in Maryland by 25% by the end of 2012. Under the leadership of Governor O’Malley and Lt. Governor Brown, there has been a 22 percent increase in the average number of daily patients in State-funded treatment since FY 2008, and a 19 percent reduction in the number of overdose deaths since FY 2007.

*PLEASE NOTE: To protect the privacy of those being treated, press will not be allowed in certain areas of the facilities and must ask permission before taking photos or conducting interviews.
