Science Finding that Action is Needed to Protect Against

Serious Health Risks Posed to Personnel at Department of

Defense Firing Ranges*


BACKGROUND: U.S. Senator Barbara Boxer (D-CA), Chairman of the Committee on Environment and Public Works (EPW), and Senator Ben Cardin (D-MD), will hold a press conference today to announce the findings of a major scientific report from the National Academies of Science. The report, released today, finds overwhelming evidence that the current lead exposure standards are not sufficient to adequately protect the health of military firing range personnel, and that actions must be taken to mitigate the risks.
