LT. GOVERNOR BROWN TO ANNOUNCE MILESTONE IN MARYLAND’S EFFORTS TO SPUR USE OF ELECTRONIC HEALTH RECORDS



CATONSVILLE, Md. (June 3, 2011) – Monday morning, Lieutenant Governor Anthony G. Brown will visit the Charlestown Retirement Community in Catonsville to announce a major milestone in Maryland’s efforts to encourage adoption of electronic health records (EHRs) by health care providers. The Lt. Governor will be joined for the announcement by Department of Health and Mental Hygiene Secretary Dr. Joshua M. Sharfstein, representatives from MedChi, The Maryland State Medical Society, and officials from Chesapeake Regional Information System for our Patients (CRISP). Charlestown residents will be also be in attendance to learn how EHRs will improve their health care quality.

Charlestown Retirement Community is operated by Erickson Living, a founding member of CRISP and a leading developer and manager of continuing care retirement communities that provide middle-income seniors with an engaging social experience and a focus on health and wellness. Erickson Living has developed innovative solutions that integrate its clinical management software, electronic health records and custom developed portals to deliver information to both medical practitioners and community residents.

The O’Malley-Brown Administration has made the establishment of a comprehensive state-wide, private-public, and secure health information exchange and widespread adoption of EHRs by the end of 2012 one of their 15 Strategic Goals for the State of Maryland. As Co-Chair of the Maryland Health Care Reform Coordinating Council and Maryland’s Health Quality and Cost Council, Lt. Governor Brown leads the O’Malley-Brown Administration’s health care portfolio.
