An 11-year-old Ohio girl allegedly beat a 2-month-old baby to death, according to several news reports.

Two-month-old Zuri Whitehead

Two-month-old Zuri Whitehead was staying with her mother’s friend and her daughter in the Cleveland suburb of Wickliffe.  The woman fell asleep and that is when her daughter took Whitehead upstairs and bludgeoned her to death, according to Wickliffe Police Chief Randy Ice.

The 11-year-old girl brought the infant downstairs afterwards.  When the teenager’s mother saw that the baby was bleeding and had a swollen head, she immediately dialed 911.

The Cuyahoga County medical examiner found that Zuri had injuries to her head, neck, body, arms and legs, according to Yahoo News.

Whitehead was rushed to a hospital and died during surgery.

The horrific nature of the incident has the Wickliffe Police Department considering counseling for the responding officers, according to NewsOne.

There is currently no motive for the attack and the 11-year-old girl has been charged with murder in the incident. A judge ordered her to undergo a competency hearing at her detention hearing Monday.

Zuri’s mother, Trina Whitehead and the suspect’s mother had been close friends for about six years. Whitehead allowed her to watch her baby because she has three other kids and needed a break, according to NBC.

“I definitely trusted her,” Whitehead told USA Today. “I never thought my baby would be put in some type of harm.”

Because the suspect is a minor under 14-years-old, officials cannot charge the girl as an adult.  However, if she is found guilty, they can sentence her to a Department Of Youth Services facility until she turns 21.
