AmeriHealth District of Columbia, the largest Medicaid managed care organization in the District of Columbia and a member of the AmeriHealth Caritas Family of Companies, hosted a grand opening and ribbon-cutting of its new Community Outreach Wellness Center in Southeast D.C.

The free event included Wellness Center tours, healthy cooking demonstrations, fitness demonstrations, face painting, a moon bounce and musical entertainment.

The Community Outreach Wellness Center represents another way AmeriHealth D.C. is assisting members in getting care, staying well and building healthier communities. The Wellness Center features space for members to receive one-on-one care manager counseling, appointment scheduling and support to promote healthier lifestyles.

Located on Martin Luther King, Jr. Avenue, just steps from the Big Chair, the center features intimate client rooms, child-friendly waiting and examination rooms and electronic tablets for easier access to patient records. These records will now be available whether the patient comes to the new center or requires an in-home visit.

Keith Maccannon, director of marketing, outreach and community relations for AmeriHealth D.C. said using tablets with HIPAA-compliant databases allows COS representatives to capture , important information about members and their home environments in real time. This data can then be accessed immediately or whenever needed by the care management team.

“Engaging members where they live adds a new dimension to your existing care management program. And technology that allows you to provide the most current and actionable information ensures that members will get the most out of their in-home visits,” said Maccannon.

Karen Dale, executive director of AmeriHealth D.C., said that the new Southeast D.C. location is a part of a larger program to remove as many barriers as possible from residents being able to access proper healthcare.

“The new center gives our community an opportunity to have good providers within their communities and be able to access the care they need when they need it.  Some clients may not know where to start in the process of improving their health, so we provide that support,” Dale said.  “Whatever obstacles residents have in becoming and staying healthy, we want to remove. For instance, if there is a lack of transportation to get you to a center, we want to assist in ensuring there is a location near you or that transportation is available.  Removing barriers means that this center is exactly where it had to be,” Dale said.

The additional location undergirds the “I Am Healthy” public awareness campaign begun earlier this year to empower and motivate both AmeriHealth members as well as the general public in making healthy lifestyle choices.

“We can transform our lives – and our health – by the many small steps we take, every day.  The goal of this campaign is to illustrate the power of choice our members and residents have to take charge of, and improve, their own health,” said Dale.
