It looks like soul singer Aretha Franklin isn’t getting married after all.

According to the Associated Press, her representative recently released a statement saying the singer and her beaux Willie Wilkerson had decided to call off their engagement. It’s not clear whether the two are still romantically involved.

“Will and I have decided we were moving a little too fast, and there were a number of things that had not been thought thoroughly. There will be no wedding at this time,” Franklin said in a statement, according to the AP. “We will not comment on it any further because of the very personal and sensitive nature of it. We appreciate all of the many wishes from friends.”

The 69-year-old announced her engagement shortly after New Year’s Day. She told the AP at the time that she planned to have a summer wedding in either the Hamptons or Miami. She also explained that she was considering Valentino, Vera Wang and Donna Karan to design her dress.

Franklin also described her relationship with Wilkerson and said their bond is strong because they were friends first.

“We’re very compatible, and he supports me and I support him a lot, and he has given me specialized attention that I don’t think I’ve received from anyone else,” Franklin told the AP.

Last year, the singer made headlines after losing 85 pounds. According to Fox News, Franklin decided to lose the weight after deciding she “was too fat.” Her weight loss followed a health scare in 2010 that prompted her to undergo surgery. Many speculated that Franklin had pancreatic cancer, and while she denied those rumors, she would not reveal her illness.
