Bears junior linebacker Allen Stephens was named as one of the College Football Performance Awards (CFPA) Honorable Mention Players of Week after helping Morgan State hold off the Robert Morris Colonials, 13-12, on Sept. 17 at Hughes Stadium in Baltimore.

The South Boston, Va. native harassed the Colonials in MSU’s first win of the 2011 season, recording eight total tackles (four solo), including four tackles for a loss of 31 yards. Stephens was all over the field against Robert Morris, helping limit the Colonials to just 88 yards on the ground. Stephens has been on the CFPA watch list since the preseason this summer; he first started catching fans’ attention during the 2010 season, when he recorded 65 total tackles, including 11.5 for losses throughout the season.

MSU Sports Information Director Leonard Haynes said the 6-foot-2-inch, 250-pound linebacker is already being mentioned in the same breath as recent MSU standout linebackers Albert Gamble, Vincent Brown and Jerrell Guyton, and could be a top candidate to earn the FCS Linebacker of the Year Award given by the CFPA.

Stephens and the Bears will now try to gain their second win of the season as they travel to East Rutherford, N.J. to take off the Howard Bison in the annual Whitney Young Classic. This game will be the first Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference of the season for both Morgan State and Howard. Kick-off starts at 3:30 p.m. at MetLife Stadium and will be televised by ESPNU. The game will also be broadcasted live by WEAA 88.9 FM.
