In 1848 Henry “Box” Brown said goodbye to his wife and children, never to see them again. In an act of resistance, he walked four miles side by side with his bride of twelve years, until he could go no further. The very next year he would mail himself to freedom in a box shipped from Virginia to Pennsylvania.
