The Ancient Egyptian Arabic Order Noble Mystics Shrine, known as the Prince Hall Black Shriners, is currently holding its massive convention in Downtown Baltimore at the Convention Center.

The 126th Black Shriners Convention is being attended by about 20,000 members according to leaders of the organization. Although the gathering is a time for Shriners to strengthen bonds of unity and brotherhood, there is also important work to be done.

The group organized a walk to raise awareness of diabetes and raise money for diabetes research. The Shriners’ work in coordination with others continues their work in advocacy on behalf of underserved communities, particularly Black Americans.

According to the National Institutes of Health, Black Americans are almost twice as likely to develop Type Two diabetes, than Whites.
