The Bowie State Bulldogs stretched their win streak to five straight games after holding off Virginia Union University (VUU), 23-19, in a Central Interscholastic Athletic Association (CIAA) contest on Oct. 24 in Bowie, Md. The Bulldogs maintained first place in the CIAA standings with a 7-1 overall record, 5-0 against the association.

VUU (6-2 overall, 4-1 CIAA) was by far the toughest competition for the Bulldogs this season. Both teams entered the game undefeated in the CIAA with first place on the line.

Bowie State trailed only once in the game, down 13-7, after VUU scored on a 52-yard touchdown pass in the second quarter. But the Bulldogs quickly regained the lead, 14-13, on a 62-yard touchdown pass from freshman quarterback Nyema Washington. Bowie State wouldn’t lose the lead again as Washington tossed another touchdown pass in the third quarter to extend the lead to a comfortable margin.

Washington finished 10-of-24 for 206 yards. He tossed two touchdown passes but also threw four interceptions. Graduate running back Kendall Jefferson led Bowie State with 148 rushing yards on 18 carries.

VUU quarterback Shawheem Dowdy had a great game, despite the loss. He completed 28 of 40 pass attempts for 399 yards and three touchdowns.

Next – The Bulldogs will host the Lincoln Lions (3-5 overall, 1-4 CIAA) on Oct. 31.
