Bowie State graduate quarterback Matthew Goggans tossed three touchdown passes, but it was the Bulldogs’ defensive unit that made the difference in a 34-21 victory over Johnson C. Smith University on Oct. 3 in Charlotte, N.C.

The win advanced Bowie State’s record to 4-1, and 2-0 against the Central Interscholastic Athletics Association (CIAA).

Goggans continued his standout season with three more touchdown passes, giving him a respectable total of 16 through the first five games of the year. Goggans’ three touchdowns against Johnson C. Smith built a 20-7 lead for Bowie State in the second quarter.

But Johnson C. Smith mounted a comeback and took a 21-20 lead in the third quarter after a Bowie State fumble was recovered and run back 40 yards for a touchdown.

Fortunately for Bowie State, its defense immediately responded by forcing a fumble and returning it for a 42-yard defensive touchdown. Bowie State scored again in the fourth quarter to secure the 34-21 win.
