Howard freshman quarterback Caylin Newton ran for 140 yards and scored three touchdowns, including the game-winner as the Howard Bison edged the Bethune-Cookman Wildcats, 26-24, in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) game on Sept. 23 in Washington, D.C.

The win put Howard (2-2) back in the winner’s column after two straight losses.
Howard trailed, 14-7, in the first half before Newton tossed a 5-yard touchdown pass to senior running back Anthony Phiyaw to tie the score at 14 at halftime.
Newton ran in a short touchdown early in the third quarter to push the Bison ahead, 20-14, but Bethune-Cookman scored 10 unanswered points to take a 24-20 lead late in the fourth quarter. Howard responded, however, with a game-winning drive as Newton ran in a 5-yard touchdown that gave Howard the 26-24 lead with 39 seconds left.
Newton recorded 297 yards total, 140 rushing and 157 passing with two rushing touchdowns and one passing score, while Philyaw added 93 yards rushing.
Next – Howard will have a bye week next weekend before hosting N.C. Central on Oct. 7.
