Coppin State Student-Athlete Advisory Committee Named Recipient of John Lewis HBCU Grant

BALTIMORE – Coppin State University’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, led by SAAC President Jazzleen McRae, as well as advisor and head bowling coach Shaunita Middleton, has been selected as a recipient of the 2020 John Lewis HBCU Grant.

The grant, in honor of the late congressman and civil rights pioneer, John Lewis, was formed to support voter registration, education and/or voter mobilization on Historically Black Colleges & Universities (HBCU) campuses and provides up to $2,000 for their programming.

“Voting is so important because it’s our time to take our future into our own hands and electing the officials we see best fit for the success of the people,” said McRae. “Especially now, with so much social unrest and a global pandemic, our voices, opinions and lives matter because they’re the ones being most affected. The John Lewis HBCU Grant gives us the opportunity to highlight the significance in a fun, creative way, not only to Coppin students, but also the surrounding community.”

To date, all members of Coppin’s bowling, softball, men’s & women’s tennis, volleyball and women’s basketball teams are registered to vote.
