The Dallas Cowboys scored three touchdowns, including a 86-yard punt return for a touchdown as they cruised to an easy 31-16 victory over their archrival, the Washington Redskins, on Oct. 13 at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas.
On perhaps the biggest play of the game, Cowboys’ return specialist Dwayne Harris returned a punt 86 yards for a score, pushing Dallas ahead, 14-3 in the 2nd quarter. The return shifted the momentum in favor of the Cowboys, who wouldn’t relinquish the lead for the remainder of the game.
Washington cut the lead to 14-9 in the third quarter after successfully making two field goals, but Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo responded by making a 15-yard touchdown toss to cushion Dallas’ lead, 21-9.
The Redskins, however, came back with a 45-yard touchdown run by Alfred Morris, cutting the lead to 21-16. Dallas, nevertheless, pulled away in the fourth quarter; scoring 10 unanswered points, including a one-yard touchdown by running back Joseph Randall to set the score at 31-16.
Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III struggled for most of the second half, finishing 19 of 39 for 246 yards, no touchdowns and a pick. He did run for 77 yards on 9 carries; Alfred Morris ran for 81 yards and a touchdown on 16 carries.
Romo completed 18-of-30 passes for 170 yards, a touchdown and an interception. DeMarco Murray ran for 29 yards and a touchdown.
Washington drops to 1-4 on the season, while Dallas advances to 3-3. The Redskins will next host the Chicago Bears on Oct. 20.
