As part of the push to encourage District youth to make healthier food choices and be more active throughout the day, the District of Columbia Office of the State Superintendent of Education (OSSE) will hold a Children and Families Health Expo Oct. 4.
The expo is part of the city’s Let’s Move! D.C., a local program in response to First Lady Michelle Obama’s national campaign to fight childhood obesity.
The health event will run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Deanwood Recreation Center located at 1350 49th St. in Northeast D.C.
The expo will include cooking demonstrations, fishing and dance lessons, music, games and a farmers market.
The Street Basketball Association, dedicated to pioneering the dreams of street ball players around the world by merging street ball’s credo of “true grit, true game” with “true entertainment,” will also host clinics and skills exhibitions. The association is located in Mitchellville, Md. Street basketball stars Hugh “Baby Shaq” Jones and Randy “White Chocolate” Gill will sign autographs and take photos, according to a press release.
Community organizations will also be available with information for families on healthy eating, early childhood education, and youth fitness and enrichment programs.
