Edwards Labor Day Statement

Washington, D.C. – Congresswoman Donna F. Edwards (MD-4) released the following statement to commemorate Labor Day, observed on September 7, 2015.

“Labor Day is an important opportunity to commemorate the economic and social achievements of generations of hardworking men and women across the country.  It is their unwavering dedication that helped make America the land of opportunity for all.  I am particularly thankful for the power of organizing and the value of the Labor Movement in bringing us a minimum wage, safe workplaces, and retirement security.  Their efforts through collective bargaining and organizing fundamentally changed the quality of life for millions in the United States and around the world.

“As we celebrate the achievements of the past, Labor Day is also a time to reaffirm our commitment to the future.  Congress must take action to rebuild our crumbling infrastructure, promote STEM learning, reduce the crushing burden of student loan debt, and ensure access to affordable, quality education.   But it cannot end there.  Women must also be provided with the tools necessary to fully realize their potential with an economic agenda that ensures the economic security of women and families by providing equal pay for equal work, raising the minimum wage, guaranteeing paid sick leave, and improving access to affordable child care.  I know that ‘When Women Succeed, America Succeeds.’
“This Labor Day, and each day, let us stand together to support workers and families who are the backbone of the American economy.”
