Edwards Statement on Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action Regarding Iran
Washington, D.C. – Congresswoman Donna F. Edwards (MD-4) issued the below statement regarding today’s announcement that a Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) was reached between the P5+1, the European Union, and Iran.
“Today’s announcement is an historic step forward to ensure Iran is incapable of developing a nuclear weapon. I commend President Obama and Secretary Kerry for their leadership and continued, persistent engagement with our international partners to make today possible. I applaud the P5+1 for providing the best opportunity, through strong diplomacy, to achieve a viable agreement and lasting peace. I am encouraged by the parameters outlined in this framework. We must continue to give diplomacy time so a final, written and verifiable deal comes to fruition.
“I urge my colleagues in Congress to see these negotiations through to their end and not move any legislation that would undermine this negotiation. I look forward to continuing to work with the Administration as the final details of the agreement are written to ensure that Iran and the international community meet all promises and commitments for verification.”
