A four-year-old Texas boy accidentally shot and killed himself March 1 after he found a loaded gun in his babysitter’s house.

Codrick McCall Jr. was dropped off by his mother at a friend’s home in Harris County, Texas on Feb. 28 for an overnight stay so she could go out and celebrate her birthday, The Houston Chronicle reported. The next morning, McCall found a gun in the home and accidentally shot himself.

“My baby is gone,” McCall’s mother, Ashley Beal, told the Chronicle.

Harris County deputies and Texas Child Protective Services are investigating how McCall obtained a loaded gun.

“You can’t bring death back,” McCall’s grandmother, Sharron McCall told Houston ABC affiliate KTRK. “All we can do is try to pick up the pieces and continue with life. There is nothing else to do.”

Family, friends, teachers and classmates of McCall, Jr., gathered at the K3 Creative Center Childcare to give him a special send off by releasing balloons in the sky in his memory.

Police said the case has been referred to a Harris County grand jury, which will determine whether to bring charges.
