Germany defeated the U.S., 1-0, Thursday in a Group G match of the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. Despite the loss, the Americans advanced to the Round of 16 with Portugal’s 2-1 win over Ghana.

The U.S. faced a defensive battle against Germany. The score was tied 0-0 at halftime but Germany took the lead when Thomas Mueller booted a goal from mid-left field while U.S. goalie Tim Howard was recovering from a diving save just seconds earlier. The goal put the Germans ahead, 1-0, in the 53rd minute, and they held off the Americans the rest of the way. It was Mueller’s fourth goal in the tournament.

With the victory, Germany won Group G with seven total points. The U.S. advanced with four total points; Ghana and Portugal were both eliminated from Group G.

The U.S. will next face Belgium, the winner of Group H, in the Round of 16 on July 1. The game will be aired on ESPN; start time is 4 P.M. Eastern time.
