Senior quarterback David Watford scored three touchdowns to help the Hampton Pirates claim the title in this year’s edition of the “Battle of the Real HU,” beating Howard University, 37-19, in the AT&T Nation’s Football Classic on Sept. 18 at RFK Stadium in Washington, D.C.
The loss dropped Howard’s record to 0-3 this season.
Hampton (2-1) took control early on, scoring 13 unanswered points in the first quarter. Howard got on board in the second quarter with a 35-yard touchdown run by senior running back Aquanius Freeman. But Hampton kept the pressure on, and Howard didn’t score another touchdown until the fourth quarter, when it was too late.
Watford ran in two touchdowns and also tossed a 21-yard touchdown pass to sophomore running back Thomas Allen.
Freeman led all rushers in the game with 129 yards on the ground, averaging 7.2 yards per carry for Howard. Junior quarterback Jamie Cunningham struggled for Howard, tossing three interceptions.
Howard will face the Morgan State Bears on Sept. 26 in a home game at Greene Stadium in D.C.
