The Howard Bison basketball team’s red hot streak was disrupted Dec. 5 after losing a 66-63 nail-biter to fellow Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) club North Carolina A&T at the Corbett Sports Arena in Greensboro, N.C.
The Bison men had lost their first two games of the season on the road against the University of Massachusetts and Rutgers but followed that up with five straight wins to command a 5-2 record.
Saturday’s contest against N.C. A&T was Howard’s first MEAC action of the season, and it turned out to be a thrilling affair that wasn’t decided until the final seconds. Down, 64-63, with seconds left, the Bison put the ball into the hands of their best player, junior James Daniel III. Daniel, who scored 20 of his game-high 28 points in the second half, was able to put up a decent shot for the potential game-winner, but he missed and the Aggies came up with the rebound and secured their victory with two clutch free-throws.

“ had a great look for the win, but unfortunately it did not go in,” Bison head coach Kevin Nickelberry said after the game. “I’m comfortable with him taking that shot every time.”

N.C. A&T was led by Bruce Beckford, who scored a team-high 16 points, including the game-clinching free throws in the final seconds. The win gave the Aggies a 3-7 record and extended their own current win streak to three straight.

Next – Howard will face another MEAC opponent on Dec. 7 with a matchup against N.C. Central in Durham, N.C. The Bison then travel to West Lafayette, Ind., to take on Purdue on Dec. 9, followed by a trip back home to host Radford in D.C. on Dec. 12.
