Sophomore running back Herb Walker Jr. ran for 141 yards and scored three touchdowns to lead the Morgan State Bears to a 38-35 win over the Howard University Bison in the N.Y. Urban League Classic game on Sept. 20 at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J.

It was an absolute thriller between the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) rivals as the Bears edged out the Bison with a 38-yard field goal by sophomore kicker Chris Moller with only 28 seconds left.

Morgan State led, 14-7, early in the first quarter after Walker and Bears senior quarterback Robert Council both scored short touchdown runs. But Howard senior quarterback Greg McGhee scored on a short touchdown run of his own in the second quarter to tie the game at 14 before halftime.

Walker scored two more touchdowns in the third quarter and Council tossed a 17-yard touchdown pass to push Morgan State ahead, 35-21. But the Bison rallied and scored two touchdowns in the fourth quarter to tie the score at 35 with two minutes left in the game, setting up Moller’s game-winning field goal.

Walker finished with 141 yards on 32 carries, scoring two rushing touchdowns and one touchdown reception. Council completed 13 of 22 pass attempts for 168 yards and two touchdowns, with no turnovers. Council also ran for 90 yards and a touchdown.

McGhee completed 16 of 35 pass attempts for Howard for 229 yards; he also led Howard with 74 rushing yards and three touchdowns, but also tossed an interception.

Morgan State (2-2, 1-0 MEAC) will travel to Norfolk, Va. to face Norfolk State (0-4, 0-0 MEAC) on Sept. 27, while Howard (1-3, 0-1 MEAC) will host North Carolina A&T (3-1, 0-0 MEAC) in D.C. the same date.
