Christopher Cummings, nephew of Maryland Congressman Elijah Cummings (D), was shot and killed on June 10 in his apartment near the campus of Old Dominion University.
“My family and I remain in shock over the news of the random shooting that took the life of my nephew, Christopher,” Rep. Cummings said in a statement.
According to Cummings and ODU President John Broderick, Christopher Cummings was an excellent student who was a wildly popular member of Theta Chi Fraternity. “Christopher was an amazing young man who was loved and admired by so many people who had the honor of knowing him,” Cummings said of his nephew. “An exceptional student with a 3.5 GPA, he had ambitious plans for his future after graduating from Old Dominion.”
According to reports, Christopher Cummings and his roommate, Jake Carey, were ambushed in the early morning hours of June 10. CBS News reports Carey was able to crawl away and seek help, but Cummings succumbed to his injuries shortly after the attack.
It was the latest in a string of crimes that had plagued the ODU community recently – many of them taking place near off-campus housing. According to Broderick, the university will continue working on a plan to enhance its security in light of these incidents. “We have hired additional officers, enhanced the lighting in the garages, and installed more “blue light” emergency phones,” Broderick said in a statement. “Work is underway on significantly increased use of video surveillance and a campus-wide review of lighting.”
Both Cummings and Broderick are asking anyone with information about the shooting to contact the authorities. Broderick also said the university’s crisis counselors are available for all students and faculty having difficulty.
