Nolan Richardson, the second ever African-American head basketball coach to win the NCAA championship, has been voted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, according to reports.
Richardson is most famous for leading the 1994 Arkansas Razorbacks to a national championship victory over Mike Kryzewski and the Duke Blue Devils. Richardson led Arkansas back to the championship game in 1995 but lost to UCLA. The 72-year-old coach, having coached college basketball for nearly 40 years, has a career record of 508 wins to 206 losses, a .711 winning percentage. He currently coaches the Mexican National Team.
Richardson joins former University of Maryland head basketball coach Gary Williams – who led Maryland to the 2002 national title, and former NBA stars Alonzo Mourning and Mitch Richmond, as those selected to the 2014 inductee list. Recently retired commissioner David Stern will also be inducted at this year’s Hall of Fame ceremony as a directly elected member. The induction ceremony is scheduled for Aug. 8 in Springfield, Mass.
