A new Gallup poll suggests that unemployment rates, without seasonal adjustment, have made a significant drop during October. From Sept. 5 to Oct. 23, the unemployment rate was 8.3 percent, a major drop from 9 percent from August to September, the polling organization found.

During the same period last year, Gallup’s figures for U.S. employment were steady or increasing, which the organization said suggests this year’s rate was not fully a result of seasonal hiring patterns.

Gallup said Oct. 27 their findings indicate that next week, the U.S. government is likely to report a seasonally adjusted unemployment rate of less than 9 percent.

The Labor Department reported Oct. 21, “in September, 25 states reported over-the-month unemployment rate decreases, 14 had increases, and 11 and the District of Columbia had no change. Nonfarm payroll employment decreased in 25 states, increased in 24 states and the district, and was unchanged in 1 state.”

The findings echo what the private research group is seeing. Major retailers have announced that they were adding thousands of new temporary employees for the holidays, which may explain how minimally these companies were staffed throughout the year, Gallup analysts reported.

The growth could suggest that companies planned early to grow in the fourth quarter. This drop could help financial officers determine the outlook out of the economy.

“…this improvement in the U.S. employment situation appears real right now — and, in turn, this suggests that those on Wall Street might find themselves rethinking their expectations about the economy and jobs as the year comes to a close,” wrote Dennis Jacobe, a chief economist for Gallup.
