HOUSTON (AP) — Texas Southern University was on lockdown Friday as police searched for a suspect after two people were shot at a student housing complex, university officials said.

The shooting was reported around 11:30 a.m. at University Courtyard Apartments, on the edge of the Houston campus. University spokesman Kendrick Callis said the suspected shooter was still on the loose as of early afternoon. He said the campus is on lockdown and classes have been cancelled.

“Campus police sent an alert saying the shooting occurred at the housing complex,” Callis said.

Houston and campus police didn’t immediately return messages seeking comment. Police and emergency vehicles were at the scene, though no additional details were immediately available.

The university has about 9,700 students.
