Van Hollen Announces $74,655 for Sykesville Freedom District Fire Department
 
Washington, DC – Today Maryland Congressmen Chris Van Hollen announced that the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), under the Department of Homeland Security, has awarded a $74,655 grant to the Sykesville Freedom District Fire Department for operations and safety.
“Our first responders selflessly put their lives on the line every day, and they work tirelessly to make sure we are as educated and prepared for disasters as possible,” said Congressman Van Hollen. “This important funding will give Sykesville’s first responders the resources necessary to better protect themselves and those in harm’s way.”
The Sykesville Freedom District Fire Department will use the funds to purchase safety jackets that better protect firefighters from heat and other hazards.
Federal funds are awarded through the Assistance to Firefighters Grant program, which aims to strengthen first responders’ ability to maintain their own safety improving their ability to protect the public as well. Operations and Safety grants are used for professional training, wellness and fitness programs equipment, personal protective equipment, modifications to facilities, and supplies that support firefighting and non-affiliated EMS operations and safety.
