Van Hollen Releases New Report: Republicans, Poverty, and the Budget: Rhetoric vs. Reality
Washington, DC –  Today Maryland Congressman Chris Van Hollen, Ranking Member of the House Budget Committee, released a report detailing the disparity between Republican rhetoric on poverty and the devastating impact the policies they proposed in the their budget would have on struggling Americans.
“Speaker Ryan’s promise of a more functional House and Republican ideas to tackle poverty have both turned out to be empty rhetoric,” Congressman Van Hollen said. “When you dig beneath the talking points and examine the impact of their ideas, it is clear that the Republican budget would have a devastating impact on the most vulnerable Americans — those we should be focused on lifting up the most. While it is not surprising that the extreme Tea Party wing of the Republican party has totally derailed Speaker Ryan’s agenda, it is a disservice to all Americans that their dysfunction has robbed us of a real debate about tackling the challenge of our time — creating more shared prosperity and ending poverty in America.”
