Van Hollen Statement on Announcement of New Johns Hopkins University Cancer Research Center

Washington, DC – Maryland Congressman Chris Van Hollen released the following statement after Vice President Joe Biden visited Johns Hopkins University to announce $125 million in philanthropic funding to launch an institute devoted to the study of a new and promising approach to cancer treatment:

“Today Vice President Joe Biden and Johns Hopkins University President Ronald J. Daniels delivered exciting news about donations from Michael Bloomberg, Sidney Kimmel, and other philanthropists supporting a new research center to study immunology, which has the potential to eventually end all forms of cancer. Institutions in Maryland, from universities like Johns Hopkins to our public assets like the National Institutes of Health, are at the forefront of breakthroughs that save lives. Unfortunately, federal funding for research is once again under assault by the Republican budget proposal in Congress. For the sake of everyone’s health and the health of our economy, we must make robust investments in medical research – and fight back against efforts to cut it.”
