Van Hollen Statement on NTSB L’Enfant Plaza Incident Report
Washington, DC – Today Maryland Congressman Chris Van Hollen released the following statement on the National Transportation Safety Board’s (NTSB) report on the fatal 2015 L’Enfant Plaza incident:
“Today’s NTSB hearing and report confirms that the L’Enfant Plaza tragedy was the result of failures at all levels of the WMATA system, both in policy and practice. I am deeply disturbed by reports that the agency sent passenger trains to identify sources of smoke. While WMATA now says they have ended that practice, it is indicative of a system that failed to meet even the most basic safety standards.
“I expect WMATA to respond promptly to the NTSB’s recommendations but, more importantly, we must ensure that the agency does not simply check the box and consider its job done. Years of NTSB recommendations have shown that WMATA has repeatedly failed to integrate safety into every aspect of its work. We need a systemic approach rather than a piecemeal response.”
